When you hear the word arthritis you generally think of old people just getting old and their bodies not working like they used to right? I know I did! Nobody thinks about kids getting arthritis, or what arthritis actually does to your body. Thats what I want to change. I want to give a voice to the 61,500 kids living in Canada that deal with arthritis every day.

So what is arthritis anyways? That’s just it! Arthritis is just an umbrella term to sum up over 100 different medical conditions that all act a bit differently. The common thread among these 100-plus conditions is that they all affect the musculoskeletal system and specifically the joints. For many people with arthritis, however, joint involvement is not the extent of the problem. Many forms of arthritis are classified as systemic, meaning they can affect the whole body. In these diseases, arthritis can cause damage to virtually any bodily organ or system, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, blood vessels and skin.

The most common out of them all is Osteoarthritis (OA), the most common form of arthritis, is a progressive degenerative joint disease characterized by the breakdown of joint cartilage. Next is JA, or Juvenile Arthritis. Basically that’s what you get when you have some form of arthritis and you’re under 16, but it’s just another umbrella term for the many different forms. Then there’s Rheumatoid Arthritis. This is what I’ve got!

I was diagnosed last summer when I broke my foot. Turns out it broke because of arthritis. I’d been a competitive figure skater for 10 years, super active, I ate right, I was 17…yea defiantly wasn’t expecting to hear that I had “arthritis.” Because of the damage of all the little joints in my feet I was forced told I couldn’t skate anymore, couldn’t run, couldn’t open my water bottle…after it spread around my body I had to learn how to do lots of things differently. (if you want a laugh watch my try and open those child proof medicine lids while my hands are flaring, like seriously who puts arthritis pills in a bottle that an arthritic person can’t open? It’s a gong show lol)

Wikipedia describes it as “Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease that results in a chronic, systemic inflammatory disorder that may affect many tissues and organs, but principally attacks flexible (synovial) joints. It can be a disabling and painful condition, which can lead to substantial loss of functioning and mobility if not adequately treated.” I like to think of it as my white blood cells don’t recognize my joints as me, so they like to nibble them.

If you told me a year ago that I’d have arthritis and be taking over 70 pills a week and giving myself and injection of chemo on top of that I’d laugh in your face. If I don’t though I can’t do normal things like walk up stairs or go to school. I’m not happy that I have it. It seriously sucks sometimes, BUT I’ve learnt a lot about myself and that I can do anything. Hopefully this showed you the other side of arthritis. The side that stops little kids from playing and being a kid. I don’t want this disease to rob another child of their childhood. With awareness and support we can stop that.

Well hey there! Fancy seeing you here…on my blog…on the internet…okay so maybe I’m not actually seeing you but I do want to say a big thank you for visiting it. This entire pageant adventure has made me realize just how much support I need to do this and every little bit is VERY appreciated. Even knowing that you’re reading this seriously makes my day!

I’m so honoured to have been crowned Miss Teen Vancouver Island-World 2013 and to have met the most amazing girls around the province. Whenever I mention my title or say I’m involved in the world of pagentry, most of the time peoples first reaction is what I like to call the “look.” The look consists of slightly squinted eyes and a bit of distaine across their face. People like to jump to what they know of pageants and assume I’ve been prancing around a stage like Honey Boo Boo. Let me tell ya, it’s quite the opposite. When I walked into that glorious ballroom on the first day of the pageant I was greeted with smiles from the most caring and beautiful ladies around. I assumed everyone would get really competitive and caddy, but we turned into one big family. The sisterhood of the BC Babes!

Throughout the weekend we grew closer and closer, helping each other with our walks and choreography; getting to know each other; reassuring each other that are feet would be okay after 8 hours of high heels a day…etc. etc. The main point I’m trying to make is that pageants aren’t just about a bunch of pretty girls standing on a stage, it’s about being your own kind of beautiful in every aspect. The group of BC delegates certainly proves that. Not only are the gorgeous on the outside, but on the inside too.

Along with stomping out the stigma of pageants, I also want to shine a light on my platform of childhood arthritis. I’ll do a separate blog post in the up coming days going into more detail of what that’s all about, so stay tuned and check back. My goal is to give a voice to the 60,000 children in Canada fighting the battle with arthritis that nobody seems to know about!

Again I would like to say a big thank you to YOU! For showing your support to me, and to my family and friends who are cheering me on. I couldn’t do this without the support of my community. <3 A special shout out to Nichole Taylor Photography for sponsoring me! Do me a favour and , go check her page out she’s seriously amazing!

Introducing: “Sara’s Dream World”

Sara Winter, who is a small town girl, is plunked into New York City to become a model. All of a sudden she is put in situations that she never thought she would be in, but can she keep on the good books or will she come crashing down under the big lights?  Only you will know if you the new reality series “Sara’s Dream World” is launched. I am going to explain why it is good for your companies “Rimmel London” and “Marc Jacobs” and pitch you my idea for this one of a kind reality TV series all about me; Sara Winter.

Pitch

Sara Winter has always wanted to become a top model but living in a small town was never doing her any justice. When she gets the phone call from a casting agent who wants her to come to New York, there are no question asks she gets up and goes. She never knew how hard giving up her old life would be although she is looking forward to her future in New York. All of sudden she is booking jobs with all sorts of companies and is doing things she never thought she could do. With all the spotlight comes misery and she is learning the hard way. Trying to make it as a model they are constantly bugging you about your weight and looks and you never get time for yourself. Sara is having a hard time and becoming homesick, there comes a time when she just wants to go home and give up. Meeting new people and becoming closer to her goal becomes rewarding. Sara experiences heart break and even gets put in awkward situations. Nobody said the modeling market was easy, Sara just never got warned. Eventually she learns about it and just keeps working towards her goal. Will she make it in the industry? Or will she come crashing down? You will have to wait and see if “Sara’s Dream World” gets launched.

I have also picked out the theme song:

Companies

How this series compliments and helps your businesses is simple.  If you fund my show you will get TV time which will help promote your businesses. As Sara is working in the fashion world so are your two companies. Casting Calls for your companies will always come first and if Sara becomes famous enough she will model for your companies. Sara can be styled on the show by Marc Jacobs and have her makeup done by Rimmel London, which is extremely good promotion for your business’s and helps out the both of us! I think if you fund my show and get it launched you will not regret it because in the long run we both benefit positive from the outcome.
